Substrates and Finishing

The CMYK article assumed an ideal sheet of paper. Real paper is anything but ideal - it has its own color, it drinks ink, it brightens under sunlight, and a coating or a foil can change a color after it is printed. The substrate is not a passive background; it is half of the final color. This is the interactive tour of how the material - paper, ink, and finish - shapes what comes off the press.

The substrate is half the color

On a screen, the brightest a color can be is the backlight. In print, the brightest a color can be is the paper - and paper is never pure white. Every printed color is ink sitting on, and partly soaking into, a tinted, textured surface. Change the surface and you change the color, even with identical ink. The demo below sends one ink to four common stocks.

Paper white, brightness, and OBAs

"White" paper covers a wide range. Brightness measures reflectance of blue light; whiteness measures how neutral (vs warm/cream) it is. To push whiteness up, mills add optical brightening agents (OBAs) - fluorescent dyes that absorb invisible UV and re-emit it as blue, making the sheet look crisper than its raw fibers. The catch: OBAs only fire when the light contains UV, so the same paper looks blue-white in daylight and noticeably warmer under UV-free tungsten or some LEDs.

Watch the brighteners switch off without UV

Set the paper's base warmth and how much OBA it contains, then flip the viewing light. Under daylight the OBA adds a blue-white pop; switch to tungsten (no UV) and the brighteners go dark, revealing the paper's true warmth. This is why a sheet can look perfect in the shop and yellow on the client's desk.

Coated vs uncoated

The single biggest substrate variable is whether the paper is coated. A coating seals the surface so ink sits on top as a crisp film - little spread, high holdout, deep blacks, vivid color. Uncoated paper is raw fiber that wicks ink inward: the dots spread (high dot gain), midtones plug up and darken, the maximum density is lower, and the paper's tint shows through. Same separation, very different tone.

The same tonal ramp on two papers

Both bars are the identical 0-100% tonal ramp. The coated bar has low dot gain and a near- black shadow; the uncoated bar gains in the midtones - they fill in and darken - and bottoms out at a lifted black on a warmer sheet. Drag the press dot gain to exaggerate the effect.

The substrate sets the gamut

Put it together and the paper defines the printable gamut. The white point is the paper itself, so a creamy uncoated stock can never make a clean cyan or a pure white. The black point is the densest ink the surface will hold, so absorbent stock cannot reach a deep black. Between those limits, holdout and dot gain decide how saturated and how smooth the tones can be. Coated, bright stock gives the widest gamut; uncoated, newsprint, and colored stock each shrink it in their own way.

Why one "for print" file is not enough. Because the gamut is the substrate, every paper/press combination needs its own ICC profile. A file separated for glossy coated and run on uncoated will print dark and muddy - the conversion targeted a gamut the paper does not have. Match the profile to the actual stock.

Ink beyond CMYK

When process inks cannot reach a color - or a job needs an effect no dot pattern can fake - printers add ink beyond the four. These are spot inks on their own plates, and some sit physically outside any CMYK gamut.

Spot color
A pre-mixed ink (e.g., a Pantone) printed solid from one plate - exact, consistent, and able to hit out-of-gamut hues.
Metallic
Inks with metal flake that reflect like a surface, not a pigment. No combination of CMYK dots reproduces a true gold or silver.
Fluorescent
Neon inks that re-emit light, exceeding normal reflectance - they look brighter than "white" and live far outside process gamut.
Opaque white
A white ink laid down first on dark or clear substrates so process colors have something to sit on. Essential on kraft, foil, and clear film.

Finishing

After the ink is down, finishing can still change the color you perceive. A gloss coat deepens shadows and boosts apparent saturation by reflecting light specularly; a matte coat scatters light, lifting blacks and muting color; a localized spot varnish, a foil, or an emboss adds sheen, metal, or texture that no flat ink can. Finishing is part of the color decision, not an afterthought.

How a coat changes the same printed color

The panel is a single printed red. Switch the finish: gloss deepens and saturates with a specular sheen, matte lifts and mutes it, spot varnish adds a glossy highlight stripe, and foil overlays a metallic sweep. The ink is identical; the finish does the rest. (Stylized preview.)

Proof on the real stock

Because the substrate carries so much of the color, a proof is only trustworthy if it accounts for the actual paper. A contract proof simulates the target stock's white point and gamut on a calibrated device; better still is a press proof or at least a drawdown of the spot inks on the real sheet. Soft proofing on screen must use the destination ICC profile and simulate the paper white, or the highlights will look cleaner on screen than they ever will on the page.

Practical guide

If you want… Reach for…
Maximum vivid color and deep blacks Bright coated (gloss/silk) stock with a matching coated profile.
A natural, tactile, premium feel Uncoated stock - and design for its smaller gamut and softer tone.

Pitfalls and gotchas

Assuming paper is white
Highlights take on the paper's tint. Soft-proof with paper-white simulation, not against #FFF.
Wrong profile for the stock
A coated separation on uncoated prints dark and muddy. Match the profile to the actual paper.
OBA surprise
A sheet that pops in daylight goes yellow under tungsten. Choose OBA level for the real viewing light.
Expecting coated color on uncoated
Uncoated cannot hit the same saturation or black. Design within its gamut from the start.
No white under on dark stock
Process colors vanish on kraft or clear film without an opaque white underprint.
Forgetting the finish
Gloss vs matte visibly shifts saturation and black depth. Decide the finish before approving color.
