Warm and Cool Colors: The Temperature of Color
We do not just see colors - we feel their temperature. A red-orange room feels cozy; a blue one feels crisp. This warm-cool sense is a second axis running across the color wheel, and it quietly drives depth, mood, and balance in every image. It is also slippery: warmth is relative, and even a gray has a temperature. This is the interactive guide to the temperature of color.
The second axis of color
Hue tells you which color; warmth tells you how it feels. The association is ancient and physical: warm colors - reds, oranges, yellows - are the colors of fire, embers, and sun. Cool colors - greens, blues, violets - are the colors of water, sky, ice, and shadow. We learn the link so early it feels built in.
Note the deliberate clash with physics: the color temperature of light measured in Kelvin runs the opposite way - high-Kelvin light is bluer ("cool") yet physically hotter, low-Kelvin light is oranger ("warm") yet cooler. The everyday warm-cool feeling and the physicist's Kelvin scale are two different things that happen to share the word "temperature."
Where warmth lives on the wheel
Split the color wheel down the middle and one half is warm, the other cool. The warmest point sits around orange (~40°) and the coolest roughly opposite around blue (~210-220°). The two hues on the dividing line - a yellow-green and a red-violet - are the ambiguous "swing" colors that can read either way. Drag the marker to read any hue's temperature.
Read the temperature of a hue

Advancing and receding colors
Place a warm and a cool patch on a neutral field and the warm one seems to step forward while the cool one sinks back. Part of this is optical - the eye focuses long (red) and short (blue) wavelengths at slightly different depths - and part is learned, because distant things go hazy and blue. Painters exploit it constantly: warm foregrounds, cool distances. Pick two colors and see which advances.
Which color steps forward?
Two chips on a neutral field. The warmer chip is rendered as it tends to be perceived - slightly forward, with a touch more presence - and the cooler one recedes. Swap the colors and the depth flips with the temperature, not the hue names.
Warmth is relative
Here is the catch that confounds beginners: warmth is not absolute. The very same color can read warm against a cooler neighbor and cool against a warmer one. A yellow-green looks warm beside cyan but cool beside red. Painters speak of the "warm" and "cool" version of every hue. See the identical center swatch shift meaning between two surrounds.

The temperature of neutrals
Even grays have a temperature. A warm gray carries a faint red-yellow bias; a cool gray leans blue. The difference is tiny in chroma but unmistakable in feel, and good design treats neutrals as colored, not absent. Slide a gray from cool to warm and watch a "neutral" come alive.
Neutrals have a temperature too
