Spot Colors, Duotones, and Specialty Inks

Four-color process is a marvel, but it has limits: it cannot hit a brand's exact orange, it cannot shimmer, it cannot glow, and it cannot print bright on a brown bag. For everything CMYK can't do, print reaches for a different toolbox - pre-mixed spot inks, two-ink duotones, metallics and fluorescents, varnishes, and opaque whites. When CMYK is not enough

Process printing builds every color out of cyan, magenta, yellow, and black halftone dots. It is economical and reproduces photographs beautifully, but it is a simulation, and simulations have edges. A vivid orange or a precise corporate navy may sit outside the process gamut. A subtle flat tint built from CMYK dots can look noisy or shift between print runs. And some effects - a gold sheen, a color that fluoresces, a glossy spot on a matte page - have no CMYK recipe at all.

The answer is a spot ink: a single, pre-mixed ink that prints from its own plate, plus a family of specialty inks and coatings for effects. They can be used alone, alongside process (e.g. "CMYK + 1 spot"), or layered for striking results.

Spot vs process in one line: process mixes a color from four inks of dots; a spot ink is that color, printed solid. Process is flexible and photographic; spot is exact, repeatable, and can go where process cannot.

Spot vs process color

The classic reason to choose a spot ink is an exact, out-of-gamut color. Saturated oranges, greens, and deep blues are the hardest for CMYK; the process build comes back duller than the target. A spot ink, mixed to a recipe (as in a Pantone guide), lands on the color every time. Pick a target below and compare the spot ink against the best CMYK process can manage.

How close can process get?

Choose a target color. The left swatch is a spot ink hitting it exactly; the right is an illustrative CMYK process approximation, which loses saturation for colors near the edge of the process gamut. The further the target is from what four inks can reach, the bigger the ΔE gap - and the stronger the case for a spot ink. (Approximation is illustrative, not a profile-accurate conversion.)

Duotones, tritones, quadtones

A grayscale photo printed with one black ink has a limited tonal range and a flat mood. A duotone reproduces the same image with two inks - usually a dark ink carrying the shadows and a second colored ink shaping the midtones and highlights. The result is richer, deeper, and tinted with personality, using only two plates. Add a third or fourth ink and you have a tritone or quadtone. Two inks, one image

A grayscale scene is mapped through two inks: the shadow ink fills the darks, the highlight ink tints the lights, and everything between blends in linear light. Try a warm sepia (dark brown + cream) or a cool blue duotone - the same tones, a completely different feel, from just two plates.

Metallics, fluorescents, varnish

Some inks do things no process build can. Metallic inks carry tiny metal flakes that catch the light, so the color shifts with viewing angle. Fluorescent inks absorb invisible UV and re-emit it as visible light, so they look impossibly bright - brighter than the paper. Spot varnish and foils add gloss, texture, or shine to chosen areas. Cycle the effects and move the light to feel them.

What CMYK simply can't do

White ink and colored stock

Process and most spot inks are translucent - they take part of their color from the paper beneath. That is fine on white stock, but print the same cyan on kraft brown or black and it comes back dull and contaminated. The fix is an opaque white underbase: lay down white first, then the colored inks on top read bright and true. Pick a stock and an ink and compare printing direct versus over white.

Why color needs a white foundation on dark stock

The same translucent ink on the same stock, two ways. Direct on stock, the dark paper shows through and muddies the color. Over a white base, the ink sits on a bright neutral foundation and shows its true hue. The darker the stock, the bigger the difference.

Extended-gamut printing

There is a middle path between "all process" and "lots of spot plates": extended-gamut (ECG) printing adds fixed extra inks - commonly orange, green, and violet - to CMYK, making a seven-color set (often called CMYK+OGV or by trade names). The wider gamut reproduces many spot colors within the process set, so a packaging line can match brand colors and run many jobs without swapping spot inks between them. It trades more inks on press for fewer plate changes and tighter consistency.

Pitfalls and gotchas

Spot left as RGB/CMYK
A spot color saved as a process build prints as dots, not the exact ink. Define it as a true spot swatch.
Trusting the screen
Metallics, fluorescents, and spot inks cannot be shown accurately on a monitor. Specify from a physical guide.
Forgetting the white base
Color art on dark or clear stock without a white underbase prints dull and see-through.
Too many plates
Every spot ink adds a plate and cost. Beyond a couple, consider extended gamut instead.
Varnish/foil as color
Coatings need their own plate and trapping. Set them up as separations, not as a fill color.
Duotone curves ignored
A flat linear map looks muddy. Real duotones tune each ink's tone curve so the inks share the range well.
