Color on Textiles: Dyeing, Printing, and Why Fabric Color Is Hard

Color on cloth plays by its own rules. The fabric is not a flat white sheet but a tangle of fibers that drink, scatter, and stretch; the same dye can blaze on silk and barely tint polyester; and the color has to survive the washing machine, the sun, and a rub against a car seat. Why fabric color is hard

Paper is a smooth, white, stable surface. Textile is the opposite: a three-dimensional mesh of fibers that absorb colorant into their structure, scatter light from countless filament surfaces, and move - draping, stretching, and creasing. Color is not laid on top; it is taken into a living material. That is why a fabric's color depends not just on the dye but on the fiber, the weave, the finish, and how the light catches the nap.

And textiles are used hard. A printed poster hangs on a wall; a dyed shirt is washed fifty times, sweated in, sat on, and left in the sun. So textile color is judged less by how it looks fresh and more by how it lasts - the family of properties called fastness.

Two big choices frame everything: how the color attaches (a dye bonded into the fiber, or a pigment glued to the surface) and what the fiber is (cotton, wool, silk, polyester...). Get those right and the rest - shade, depth, fastness - follows.

Dye versus pigment

A dye is soluble: its molecules dissolve, penetrate the fiber, and chemically bond inside it. The color goes right through, the cloth keeps its soft hand, and - with the right dye for the fiber - it resists washing. A pigment is insoluble: it is glued onto the surface with a binder. Pigment printing works on any fiber and is simple and cheap, but it sits on top, can stiffen the hand, and may crack or rub away. Compare them in cross-section and after a wash.

A magnified cross-section of cloth. Dye soaks into and colors the fibers themselves; pigment forms a colored film bridging the surface. Run the wash cycles: well-bonded dye holds, while surface pigment abrades and lightens - the difference between color that is the fabric and color that is stuck to it.

Fiber decides the color

There is no universal fabric dye. Each fiber accepts particular dye classes and takes up color to a different degree: cotton and other cellulosics use reactive or vat dyes; polyester needs disperse dyes applied with heat; wool, silk, and nylon take acid dyes. Apply the wrong class and the color barely holds. Even with the right dye, the same recipe gives a different depth and sheen on each fiber. Try one dye across fibers.

One dye, many fibers

Pick a target color and a dye class, then see the result on cotton, wool, silk, and polyester. When the dye class matches the fiber, the color is deep and true; when it does not, the fiber barely takes the dye and comes out pale. Each fiber also has its own sheen, shifting the look even on a good match.

Wash, light, and rub fastness

Textile color is graded by fastness - how well it survives real life. The big three: wash fastness (no fading or bleeding onto other clothes in the laundry), light fastness (no fading in sunlight, rated on the Blue Wool scale), and rub / crock fastness (no color rubbing off, tested wet and dry). Garments are also tested for perspiration, chlorine, and dry-cleaning. Subject a swatch to each.

How color survives use

Choose a fastness grade (1 = poor, 5 = excellent) for the dye, then run each test. Wash makes it fade and bleed onto a white swatch; light fades it over time; the crock cloth picks up transferred color when rubbed. A high grade barely changes; a low grade fails visibly on all three.

Screen versus digital printing

Dyeing colors a whole cloth one shade; printing puts a pattern on it. The workhorse is rotary screen printing - one engraved screen per color, pushing thick, vivid, opaque color, brilliant for bold flat designs and long runs. Digital textile inkjet sprays dye or pigment from a file - unlimited colors, photographic gradients, no screens, ideal for short runs and complex art, at the cost of speed and (often) peak vibrancy. Flat spot color, or photographic?

Getting textile color right

Match dye to fiber
Reactive/vat for cotton, disperse for polyester, acid for wool/silk/nylon. The wrong class will not hold.
Approve on the real cloth
Sign off color on a strike-off in the actual fiber and finish - never from a screen or paper proof.
Specify fastness
State required wash, light, and rub grades up front; sportswear and upholstery demand more than a tote bag.
Mind the lot
Dye lots vary; cut a whole garment from one lot, or shade differences will show at the seams.
Hand vs durability
Pigment is universal and easy but stiffer; dye is softer and faster but fiber-specific. Choose for the use.
Account for finish
Softeners, calendering, and coatings shift final shade and sheen - evaluate color after finishing.

Pitfalls and gotchas

Wrong dye for the fiber
A cotton dye on polyester washes straight out. Always match the dye class to the fiber content.
Approving on paper
A color that looks right on a proof can look wrong on cloth. Judge on the real, finished fabric.
Ignoring crocking
Deep shades and pigment prints can rub off onto skin and seats. Test wet and dry rub fastness.
Blend surprises
A poly-cotton blend may need two dye systems; one dye colors only its matching fiber, giving a muted heather.
Dye-lot mismatch
Sleeves and body from different lots can differ visibly. Track and group lots.
Pigment for soft goods
Heavy pigment on a flowing fabric kills the drape and hand. Use dye where softness matters.
