About ANSI 256

Terminals with 256 colors take an index: 16 system colors, a 6 by 6 by 6 color cube and 24 grays. The page finds the nearest index among the 240 fixed colors and writes the escape parameters: 38;5;n for text and 48;5;n for the background.

How this page writes it

The 16 system colors are skipped, because terminal themes repaint them; the distance is CIEDE2000.

Watch for

Most modern terminals also take 24-bit color directly, as 38;2;R;G;B, with no rounding at all.
