Lab
About Lab
CIELAB gives lightness from 0 to 100 and two opponent axes, a from green to red and b from blue to yellow. The CIE defined it in 1976 to make color differences more even, and print and color management use it.
How this page writes it
- CSS lab() uses the D50 white point, so sRGB colors are first adapted from D65 with the Bradford transform; this page does the same.
- Written to two decimal places.
Watch for
- Lab values from tools that use D65 differ from CSS lab(): the same numbers name a different color.
- Lab's lightness is more even than HSL's, but blues drift toward purple as their chroma changes; OKLab was made to fix that.
